Preparation for cleaning the throttle chamber

There is a problem that tends to occur with the 350Z that is more than 10 years old.
“The accumulation of dirt and debris in the throttle chamber causes idling problems and stalls at startup.”

The tools needed for the work are listed below.

  1. 10mm & 14mm ratchet wrench (It’s easy to have an extension of about 150 mm)
  2. flathead screwdriver
  3. carb cleaner
  4. lubricant
  5. Waste cloth

The parts you need to remove are as follows.

  1. Engine cover
  2. Strut tower bar
  3. Suction pipe
  4. Air cleaner system

The part that is color-coded in the image is that part. Red is the engine cover, green is the tower bar, and blue is the intake system. Removing the engine cover and tower bar in advance will make the work a little easier.

How to clean the throttle chamber

Removing the engine cover and tower bar

First, remove the tower bar. Because you cannot access the bolts on the engine cover unless you remove them. Remove a total of 8 bolts and nuts with a 14mm ratchet. At this time, if it seems to be stuck, apply lubricant. Next, the engine cover. This is a 10mm ratchet that can be easily removed by removing a total of 4 bolts. If it is also stuck, use a lubricant. Then it will look like the picture.

Intake system removal

With the engine cover and tower bar removed, you can finally access the main intake system. The bolts to be removed are the parts indicated by red circles.
1.Remove the clip from the air duct on the front bumper side and pull it out.
2.Remove the knob of the air cleaner box and pull out the air cleaner.
3.Remove the bolt on the right side of the air cleaner box.
4.Loosen the band in the center of the image.
5.Remove the connector near the air cleaner box (If you remove it, the check lamp may light up after the engine starts, so you can work without removing it)
Next, let’s look at the far side of the image.

Intake pipe disassembly

6.Loosen the green circle band
7.Remove the red circle bolt.
8.Under the red circle, there is a bolt to loosen the band around the blue arrow, so loosen it.
9.Now that all the pipe system is pulled out, you can see the throttle chamber when you pull out all.

10.Apply a cab cleaner to the gold part of the image and wipe the inside as dirt will float.
11.Press the upper side of the gold part to open it, so spray a cleaner on it to wipe off the dirt.
12.After cleaning, replace the pipes and bolts and finish.
13.When all is done, just in case, let’s learn the fully closed position of the throttle before starting the engine.

The procedure is

  1. Turn the key on (2 seconds or more)
  2. Turn off the key (leave it off for 10 seconds or more)
  3. Turn the key on again (2 seconds or more)
  4. Turn off the key again (leave it off for 10 seconds or more)

that’s all.
