NSX NA1 How to Remove ALB (Anti-Lock Brake)

NSX NA1 How to Remove ALB (Anti-Lock Brake)

ALB(Anti-Lock Brake) is an old-fashioned ABS installed in the early model NSX. This work is based on the assumption that it will be replaced with a late model ABS.

NSX NA1 ALB (Anti-Lock Brake)

The infamous ALB had been working fine until now, fortunately or unfortunately. However, from about two months ago, the compressor rang frequently, probably because the pressure could not be accumulated well, and the ALB suddenly stopped working during the previous circuit run, so the new tires became useless in an instant. Finally, I lifted my heavy waist and decided to replace it with ABS and prepared the parts, but for some reason it seems to be working normally these days. It was as if ALB was begging for “Don’t replace”.

NSX Remove the blower fan

First, remove the spare tire bracket to remove the blower fan. After that, shift the duct for taking in outside air and remove the couplers in three places. Then remove the upper two bolts and the lower two bolts, and shake the blower fan toward you to remove it. Then remove the battery.

NSX Handling of old piping

Now you are ready to remove the old pipe. I don’t use the old pipe anymore, so I will cut it with a clipper without hesitation.

NSX Flare nut in the left front house

An incident occurred when removing the flare nut in the left front house. I thought I took it off carefully, but it was quite stuck and slipped. I tried changing it with my own tools to see if it could be done, but at last the corners disappeared completely. I thought I should buy a stainless mesh hose again. If this happens, the last resort is Knipex Cobra (water pump pliers). This was easier than I expected because the cutting edge bites into it. The locking vise might have been more certain, but I didn’t have it.

NSX Removal of ALB body

After removing all the pipes, the ALB body is finally removed. First, remove all the orange couplers, and then remove the main body with a 14mm socket and three long extensions.

NSX NA1 ALB

It is the removed ALB. This ALB has a different control method from the current ABS, and the mechanism is that the pressure is stored in the accumulator in advance, and that pressure is used as the pedal reaction force during operation, and it is simply not locked. Therefore, there is almost no braking force during operation, and on the contrary, the braking distance becomes longer, which is a little scary specification. Well, if you get used to it, it’s better to have ALB than not at all.

NSX high pressure hose depressurization

Although it is the removed ALB, only the bracket will be reused when replacing the ABS. To do this, you have to remove the ALB main unit, compressor, and accumulator, but since they are connected by a high-pressure hose, the pressure is gradually released. Even so, the brake fluid was scattered around a little.

ALB disassembly completed.

ALB disassembly is complete. This is the removal work this time. Continue to the ABS mounting work.
